[Q] How to have the x64 versions of WMP and IE8 be the default?
Using Win7 x64 double clicking a wma file launches the 32bit version of WMPlayer same thing for html links and the 32bit version of IE8. How can we set the system to use the 64bit versions of these apps? Thanks -

hmm just noticed that. you are correct.i would assume it would have something to do with the CLASSES_ROOT part of the registry - and changing the value of the program that opens .mp3/.wav etc etc and .html /mhtml etc etc

But why not make 64 bit WMP THE default in 64 bit? And give us the codecs natively instead of having to download them from a third party. Same goes with IE8.

Because of application compatibility issues. Most users will run the default -when they have issues caused by 3rd parties that do not yet provide x64 add-on software, it will be a poor experience. Adobe Flash comes to mind, for IE. More sophisticated users will use the 64-bit apps and be able to deal with the issue more easily.Ned Pyle [MSFT] - MS Enterprise Platforms Support - Beta Team

I have this issue of wmp not closing out completly. I have to end its process in task manager to run the program again. I tried the /swaptp64 but it does the same thing.

I did make the x64 version of IE the default on XP x64 by editing the registry. I searched the registry for all instances of "C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe", and changed them to "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe". I also searched for "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe".My experiment worked for IE7. Note this will break some features of IE, namely the ones that don't work in 64 bit IE, such as flash.

I have a shortcut on my desktop to IE64 with extensions disabled so that gets round the flash problem. The link is "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -extoff about:blank"Windows 7 x64 RC, Asrock K8NF6P, AMD64 3200+, 1.5GB RAM, Palit Geforce 8400GS 256MB, 500GB Maxtor SataII, Asus 1814BLT optical
